Wind Turbine

Micro/Small-Wind Turbine

Wind technology is currently one of the most cost-effective renewable energy technologies. A wind turbine uses wind forces to generate usable electricity.

Wind turbines are highly engineered products which require specialist installation, commissioning and maintenance. It is we who carries out these tasks in order to ensure proper functioning and connection of the machines and to issue a warranty. This applies to all sizes of turbines. Full installation can take as little as a single day for smaller devices. Bigger-capacity installations may require considerably more time (weeks).

The output largely depends on the wind speed and the correlation between the two is a cube function. In order to generate worthwhile quantities of electricity, average wind speeds of more than 3 m/s are typically required.

Once installed and connected to the grid there is very little the user needs to worry about regarding a wind turbine. Maintenance of horizontal axis wind turbines is usually on an annual basis. Most turbines operate continuously throughout the year and generation and supply of electricity is fully automatic. Users have access to the metering devices showing output and export levels for which guidance is available from the turbine installers.

Cost effectiveness

Wind turbines are widely recognised to be one of the most financially viable of the renewable energy technologies.

Key Considerations

  • Is there suitable wind profile in the intended turbine location?
  • Is there an average wind speed of at least 3 m/s on site?
  • Is the area free from obstructions that could cause turbulence, such as tall buildings, other structures, trees?
  • Is there sufficient land on the development to allow the placement of the turbine(s) away from residential areas (distance depends on turbine size)?
  • Is there a need for augmentation?• What are the implications of high turbulence levels
  • Is there sufficient space on roof to install Building Mounted Wind Turbines (BMWT)
  • Is the potential structural vibration and noise implication from BMWT acceptable?
  • Is the site in or near a conservation area or area of historic interest or in Green Belt or Open Land?
